If you hate removing your blinds to clean them as much as I do, and you’re wondering how to clean horizontal blinds without removing them, this post will show you a simple way to do it without taking them down.

We can all agree that cleaning blinds is already such a tedious chore. Removing them first only adds to the hassle. But it doesn’t have to be that way—you can get your horizontal blinds really clean without taking them down.

In this post, I share exactly how to clean horizontal blinds without removing them.

Step-By-Step Guide To Clean Horizontal Blinds

Step 1: Gather Supplies.

  • Bucket
  • Rags
  • Vacuum with a brush attachment
  • Tide in powder form or Dawn dish soap
  • Hot tap water

Step 2: Vacuum Blinds From Top To Bottom With Brush Attachment.

The easy way to clean blinds without taking them down is to start by closing the blind slats facing up, as shown below. Once they face up, use the brush vacuum attachment to thoroughly vacuum every single slat.

I love the brush vacuum attachment. It is literally the best vacuum attachment for cleaning blinds.

Then, when you’re done with that side, close the blind slats facing down and repeat the same process.

If you have done this correctly, your blinds should be mostly dust-free at this point.

Step 3- Fill Up A Bucket With Hot Water And Cleaner

Next, get a bucket that can fit about a gallon of water (it doesn’t have to be exact) and fill it with hot water. Then, add a few drops of Dawn dish soap to the water.

Step 4: Wipe Blinds With A Rag And Cleaning Solution. Rinse And Repeat Until Finished.

Once the hot water is ready, start cleaning one slat at a time. (as shown above) Rinse the rag often. If your blinds are extra dirty, you might have to change your water a few times.

When you have removed all the stains and remaining dust/dirt, and your blinds are nice and clean, toss the dirty water and refill the bucket with plain water. Use this water to rinse the blinds. You’ll need a dry cleaning rag to wipe each slat one last time to ensure you don’t leave any Dawn dish soap residue.

Step 5: Open the Blinds And Let Them Air Dry.

Your blinds are clean!

At this point, your blinds should be nice and clean, so you only need to let them dry. (They dry fast.) I like to pass a clean, dry rag through each slat until they have all been wiped. Then, open the blinds (as shown above) and let them air dry.

I do not recommend opening the window/s to help them dry. You don’t want dirt on your freshly cleaned blinds, haha!

And there you have it! That’s how to clean blinds while hanging. Repeat these steps for each blind.

This is exactly how I clean my blinds without removing them, and I haven’t had to take them down to clean yet. This method keeps them very clean. And if you do it often, each time is faster and easier. I usually aim for once a month.

How I Keep Blinds From Getting Too Dusty

Blinds are one of those easy-to-forget areas. So I keep mine in rotation as part of my deep cleaning schedule so they never get overwhelmingly dusty again.
