Are you searching for an easy way to make a DIY basketball hoop? Here is an easy way to do it, even if you aren’t too savvy with power tools. If I could make it, anyone can, too!
If anyone in your family enjoys having a basketball hoop in their bedroom, playroom, office, man cave, etc., you know the struggle! If you are anything like me, who thinks the regular acrylic or plastic, colorful basketball hoops are an eyesore, and you want a nicer alternative, then a DIY basketball hoop will be your best bet!
This homemade basketball hoop is super easy to make. I made it without a clue what I was doing, so it’s definitely beginner-friendly.
After redoing my son’s bedroom decor, I decided to try making a custom basketball hoop out of plywood. I wanted a nice basketball hoop he could still play with and enjoy without being an eyesore, so I made one for him!
In this post, I share my step-by-step instructions on how I DIYed a basketball hoop for my son’s bedroom. Although I made it for his bedroom, this basketball hoop is great for an office, man cave, playroom, movie room, etc. Just find an empty wall you can mount on, and you’re all set!

DIY Basketball Hoop – The Steps
Here is how to make a homemade basketball hoop:
Step 1: Gather Supplies and Tools
- Plywood (mine is 24×17, and you can get it cut to size at Home Depot)
- Rim + Net (mine is 8 inches, and I got it from Facebook Marketplace and removed the original backboard). Ensure you keep the hardware it comes with; you will need it to attach the rim to the backboard.
- 4 – 4″ lag screws (to secure the basketball hoop to studs on the wall)
- Stain: these are the ones I used: Varathane (Briarsmoke) for the backboard and the target box and border squares: Rust-Oleum (Gloss Black)
- Lint-free rag
- Brush
- 1-inch wide tape
- Measuring tape
- Stud finder
- Drill
- Mini basketballs
I recommend going to Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, etc., and finding a used basketball hoop. They are much more affordable than buying new ones. However, if you prefer to buy a new one, here is the one I used; you can get it brand new, too. This is an 8-inch rim.
Step 2: Measure and Tape the Outline for the Target Box and Border
To move forward to this step, you want to have all supplies ready to go and your board cut to size. My board is 24×17, but you can do it in whatever size you prefer. You should also lightly sand the board. (I got my board cut at The Home Depot)
Once everything is ready, measure and decide precisely where you want your homemade basketball hoop’s target box and border. (I just eyeballed mine based on the rim size) Once you measure and mark the measurements on the plywood, apply the painter’s tape. The tape should be about 1 inch wide.

Step 3: Stain the Backboard and Remove the Tape
Once the tape is where you need it, press down on all the edges of the tape to prevent the stain from bleeding through. Next, stain your entire backboard with your desired stain.
Then, when you have stained the entire backboard, you can remove the tape. This should expose the unstained lines for the target box and border.
Step 4: Tape and Add the Final Stain Color
Next, to paint/stain the border and target box squares, add new tape. Outline the border and target box squares with tape and add the final stain color

Once you are done staining, remove the tape.
Once your board is fully stained, you can add a protective finish. However, I did not, and our basketball hoop has been in our house for about a year and a half now, and it has done perfectly without it.
Step 5: Stain Sides and Install Rim and Net
If you want the sides of your plywood stained, do that at this point. See below to see what I am talking about. I stained ours black, but you can stain whatever color you want or leave it unstained.
Once that dries, install the rim and net.
Mark circles on the bottom of the board that match the spacing of the holes in the hardware that came with your rim, then drill the holes. Once the holes are made, install the rim to the backboard.
As mentioned above, I used a second-hand basketball hoop/rim. I removed the original backboard and kept only the rim/net and original rim hardware. I then used the original hardware with the hoop and installed the rim on the homemade backboard.
Step 6: Mount DIY Basketball Hoop to the Wall Directly Into Studs Using Lag Screws
Lastly, how to mount a basketball hoop on the wall? Well, you’ll need 4 – 4″ lag screws to mount the basketball hoop to the wall securely.
Use a stud finder to find studs on your wall, then use the lag screws to secure the homemade basketball hoop to the wall by screwing the screws directly into the studs—one lag screw for each corner of the basketball hoop.
If you prefer to mount the basketball hoop differently, you can find alternative ways online that work better for you. But this worked out for us if you don’t mind holes in the wall. The basket hoop has not moved or fallen, and we have had it for years now.
