Teenage Closet Organization Ideas | Shoes

1. Use an over-the-door organizer to store and organize shoes

Looking for teen closet ideas that save you space? Using over-the-door hanging organizers is one of my favorite closet organization ideas. If your teen has a small closet and has no room for shoes inside their closet, then an over-the-door shoe organizer is the way to go. Because it will help you create storage space that otherwise was not there and will clear up more closet space for other stuff. It is seriously the perfect teen closet organizer.

2. Use shoe shelves to organize teens’ shoes

If your teen’s closet has space to store shoes, try shoe shelves. Shoe shelves are a great and easy way for teens to organize their shoes inside their closets. Shoe shelves are a great option for anyone, especially teens. Because when it comes to teens and organizational systems, you want to keep it as simple and practical as possible because this will ensure they are able to maintain the organizational system long-term.

Need space-saving closet ideas? Then definitely give this one a try!

If your teen is into clothes and they have a lot of clothing and their clothing rack is getting a little crowded, try space-saving clothes hangers. These are a great way to add more hanging space and these are perfect to hang jeans, skirts, and shorts.

4. Use matching plastic hangers to minimize visual clutter

If you don’t already have matching hangers in your teen’s closet, you definitely should give them a try. Because having mismatched hangers creates visual clutter, and a simple way to avoid that is by sticking to one color and type of hangers for the entire family. This way you don’t have to keep track of who has what color etc. and you don’t end up with mismatched hangers in everyone’s closets.

I usually prefer velvet hangers but have found that those aren’t the best for kids. Plastic hangers are much more practical for teens. I use these basic ones from Walmart but recently came across these from Target that are very similar in look to the velvet hangers but these are plastic.

5. Organize drawers with drawer dividers

If your teen struggles with keeping their drawers organized, install drawer dividers. I really love drawer dividers because they allow you to create categories within the same drawer. For example, a sock drawer can be divided by type of socks, or a pajama drawer can be divided by type of pajamas, etc. Plus, dividers help keep the items in the drawer contained and separated.

That said, drawer dividers can get very pricey, so a while back I made these drawer dividers for all our dresser drawers. So if you are up for a quick DIY, definitely check that post out.

6. Organize drawers with Honeycomb drawer organizers

As I keep mentioning throughout this post is that when it comes to teenage closet organization systems, you want to keep it super simple so that they can easily maintain it on their own. These honeycomb drawer organizers are the best for socks organization, belts, and other small accessories and are incredibly easy to maintain for anyone but especially teens.

Another kid-friendly closet organization idea is installing hooks in their closet! These hooks are great for your teen to hang their purses, backpacks, sweaters, belts, etc. And it’s an easy way to help them keep things off their closet floor.

8. Use a shoebox container to contain and categorize items

If your teen has a lot of small miscellaneous items and you don’t really know how to contain and organize them, shoe containers are just what you need! Shoebox containers are the best for organizing cords, electronics, school supplies, and any other small miscellaneous items your teen has in their closet. These are see-through, however, I recommend adding a label anyway to make the system much easier to maintain.

9. Use an over-the-door organizer for hats

Does your teen own a lot of hats? Organize all their hats in one or two of these over-the-door organizers. They create so much space and will save you so much space in your closet by keeping them stored on the door instead of inside the closet.

Does your teen closet need a little extra hanging space? Add a second clothing rack and double up the hanging space. The bottom rack can be used for items such as shorts, jeans, etc. and the top one can be to hang longer items.

12. Utilize vertical space

When you are working with a small space, you want to make sure you utilize all the vertical space you have. Many closets have all that empty space between the shelf and the ceiling, this organizer is a great way to utilize that vertical space and create so much more extra storage. This is great to store and organize your teens, sports items, school books, hoodies, jeans, etc.

13. Use space-saving bags for bulky items

Space savings bags are a great way to save space with bulky items, such as extra bedding, large jackets, extra pillows, etc.

14. Store seasonal clothing away in bins

If your teen has a lot of clothing items and their closet is small, try clearing up some closet space by storing seasonal clothing away in bins paired with the space savings bags I mentioned above. Storing seasonal items away in bins will clear up more closet space so that they have enough space to organize the stuff they are currently using.

15. Organize jewelry in a compact organizer

A great small closet for teenage girl organization idea is to organize their jewelry into a compact jewelry organizer that you can hang on the closet clothing rack. The compact design allows your teen to organize all their jewelry in a way that does not take up a lot of space but holds a lot of jewelry pieces at the same time.

16. Create zones with bins and labels

A key closet organization hack is to create zones within your closet. A great way to do that is by using bins/baskets and labels. Creating zones allows you to maximize storage space, especially in a closet.

17. Add a “donate” bin inside their closet

If you are looking for teen closet ideas that will help you keep the clutter out of your teen’s closet, then this stip is for you!

Every closet needs a “donate” bin, but especially a teen’s closet. Because teens typically grow out of their clothing at such a fast rate that it makes it impossible to keep up. So having a donate bin already in the closet where they can easily throw in items that they no longer like, or that don’t fit them anymore is key to keeping a clutter-free closet,

18. Assign a “junk” bin or basket for their miscellaneous items

If your kids are anything like mine, they like to save the most random items that really have no place to go. So ever since my teens were little kids, I started to give them a box that they can use to keep these random miscellaneous items in. This gave their random items a place to go and helped keep it all from cluttering up their closet or bedrooms.

You can use an old shoebox for this. You don’t have to buy anything fancy. My kids both still have one of these “junk” boxes in their closets and whenever they have an item, they aren’t sure where to store they just throw it in the box. It is really the best thing ever! If you give this idea a try, just make sure they sort and purge the box periodically so that it doesn’t overflow.

Teenage Closet Organization Ideas | Q & A

How do I organize my teen closet?

The best way to organize your teen’s closet is by including them in the process and implementing systems with their lifestyle in mind. When it comes to organizational systems in general, you want to make sure you focus on functionality more than anything, but even more so with teen spaces. You want to make sure your teen will be able to maintain the system with ease, so keep the system as easy and practical as possible.

How do I organize my teenage boy’s clothes?

There is no right or wrong way to organize teenage boys’ clothes. This is will depend on what your son can maintain with ease. Help him organize his clothing in a way that will make his life easier, not harder. For example, if your son finds it easier to just hang all his clothes, then he can just hang them all and skip the folding. If your son doesn’t mind folding, then file folding is definitely the best way to organize clothes as it saves so much space. Or you can do a mix of both. The goal is to make it easy and functional. So with that said, I recommend trying different ways and adjusting until you end up with a clothing organization system that works the best for him.

How do you store shirts on a shelf?

The best way to store shirts on a shelf is by storing them in bins or by using shelf dividers to keep them stacked and separated. The shelf dividers also help a ton with keeping them from falling over and it looks amazing too!

Is it better to hang or fold jeans?

I don’t think one way is better than the other one. However, it doesn’t hurt to try both ways and see what you prefer. If you have the closet space to hang your pants, you can hang them in your closet, but if you don’t, you can stack them on the closet shelf or organize them into baskets or your dresser drawers. Basically, this highly depends on the space you have for storage as well as what is the easiest to maintain for YOU.

And there you have it! Hope you found these bedroom closet organization ideas for teen bedrooms helpful and found some ideas you can implement into your teen’s closet.
