Do you need some realistic and practical ways to organize your living room? These ideas for living room organization will help you do just that!

living room organization

I think it is safe to say that the living room is a room that most spend a lot of time in. It’s a room where you most likely have family movie nights, game nights, entertain guests, etc. So it’s very important for the living room to feel inviting and a calming place to be in. And a way to achieve that is by creating an organized space. However, I know that can be hard to achieve, especially if you have kids, and/or you’re dealing with limited space.

With that said, it is so important to focus on organizing and utilizing every little inch in your living room to optimize storage space. So if you have been looking for ideas and for the best way to create a tidy, organized, functional living room space, these living room organization ideas are going to help you give your living room the organization it deserves!

This post is all about living room organization that will help you create the organized living room you always wanted.

Genius Ideas For Living Room Organization

1. use “catch-all” basket/s

If you have kids and you are looking for living room organization ideas with kids, a catch-all basket or baskets is a must! The basket/s purpose is to keep miscellaneous items that belong in other rooms out of sight. This makes tidying up the living room so much easier and faster! Because you won’t have to go back and forth from room to room taking things where they belong, instead just toss them in the basket/s and empty the baskets out every other day.

I have one basket for each of my kids in the living room and they usually empty their baskets out weekly. It’s honestly one of my favorite kid-friendly living room hacks.

I linked a similar basket sold on Amazon. However, I recommend checking out your local TJ Max, Home Goods, places like that. You can usually find baskets at a much lower price there.

2. Shelves and baskets

Another great way to add storage space to organize things in your living room is by adding wall shelves and using decorative baskets to hide things in plain sight. In this example, I have wall shelves over our dog’s crate for all her supplies that otherwise would be an eyesore. The shelves provided extra storage space where there otherwise was no storage space, and the pretty baskets hide all her random supplies.

I could have just placed her stuff on the shelves without baskets, but that would have looked cluttered. The baskets make it so that I can still have her supplies near where we need them, but they aren’t out in plain sight, making the room look cluttered.

P.S. the original baskets shown in the image are from Michaels but seem to no longer be available. So I linked these similar ones from Amazon.

3. Furniture with storage

Are you looking for small living room organization ideas? An excellent idea is to implement furniture with storage in your living room.

For example, your coffee table can double as storage, your T.V console, wall shelves, couches with hidden storage, etc. By implementing furniture pieces with storage, you’ll be able to have space to store family games, game consoles, kids’ toys, dog toys, etc out of sight and keep your living room looking tidy.

4. Store throw blankets in baskets

You might already do this, but if not, you need to give it a try. Large baskets are a great product to use to store throw blankets. You can get something open like this basket and roll or fold your blankets. Or if you want something more hidden, you can try something like this basket that has a lid and hides the blankets. Giving everything in your living room a designated space will help keep your living room organized.

5. Assign a designated space for remotes and controllers

If your kids are anything like mine, they probably misplace T.V remotes and game controllers all the time. A way I was able to fix this issue was by assigning a designated space for T. V remotes and controllers.

If you have an IKEA nearby, this is the exact one I have.

6. Organize kids’ toys

Do you need a functional living room toy organization idea that won’t be an eyesore? Try organizing your kids’ toys with the cube storage systems and baskets to hide the toys when not in use.

This is a very easy way to organize so many toys and it’s pretty budget-friendly too. And when you don’t need to store toys anymore, you can use this in another room, or use it to store and organize other living room items.

These types of baskets with the lid are also a great way to store kids’ toys/stuff while keeping your living room looking stylish and organized.

7. Organize games into zipper pouches and containers

Do you have a ton of family games that are taking up a ton of space in your living room? Try removing them from the original boxes and putting them into photo boxes and zipper pouches. I did this to all our family games over a year ago, and not only does this take up way less space, but it also looks so much better and more organized.

This organization idea may not be for everyone, but if you aren’t attached to game boxes or your game boxes are falling apart, this is really a great way to organize all your family games.

I have a full blog post with all the details of how I transferred all our games into zipper bags and photo boxes. I also have free game labels you can download.

8. Keep cords from getting tangled with cord wraps and cable clips

Have a bunch of cords tangled up behind your T. V console? These are both super cheap options to organize all of your cords. I use these cord wraps for all the cord organization needs all throughout my home, including in my car and in my purse.

10. Hide modem and Wi-Fi router with a basket

Modem and Wi-Fi routers are such an eyesore and create visual clutter. If this is an issue for you in your living room, hide your modem and router with a pretty decorative basket. Talk about genius living room organization hacks, right?

11. Utilize the corners for extra storage

If you are limited in space in your living room and you need some small living room organization ideas, corner shelves are a must-have! Every room has corners, right? So why not utilize them to your advantage?

12. Organize dog toys into pretty baskets

Do you have pets? Store their toys inside decorative baskets. This will eliminate the visual clutter and make your living room much more organized.

Living Room Organization: Q&A

1. How can I hide things in my living room?

I’ve found the best way to hide things in plain sight is by using baskets. Use small, medium, or large baskets to hide, TV remotes, throw blankets, throw pillows, kids’ toys, dogs’ toys, house shoes, etc. The baskets won’t only hide the mess in plain sight, but they also double as decor! Win-win!

2. How can I add more storage to my living room?

Here are some ways you can add more storage to your living room:

  • Use baskets to hide things in plain sight.
  • Buy furniture that can double as storage space. Some examples: Couches with hidden storage space, coffee tables with space for baskets, TV consoles with shelves or drawers, ottomans, etc.
  • Wall shelves paired with baskets.
