How to Clean a Stainless Steel Range Hood Without Streaks
This routine is part of the cleaning system I use at home. If you want everything organized into a single, simple checklist system, check it out here.

Cleaning Supplies I Use:
- Orange Glo
- Microfiber Cloth
- Rags
- Dawn Power Wash
- Brush
- Bucket
- Water
Step-by-Step Cleaning Process:
Safety First: Unplug and Prep
Unplug the range hood and, if needed, turn off the circuit. Cover the stove and surrounding counters. As an alternative, you can use trash bags or newspapers.
Remove and Soak Filters
Grease Filter: Depending on the level of greasiness, I clean the filter in one of two ways.
First, I generously spray both sides with Dawn Powerwash Spray and let it sit for about 30 minutes to help degrease the surface. Then, I scrub it under warm water to remove the loosened grease. This method usually works well after one or two rounds.
If it still feels grimy, I pop it into the dishwasher, which does an excellent job of removing any leftover buildup.
Clean the exterior Hood Surface.
For the hood canopy—especially when it’s greasy—I spray it down with Dawn Powerwash, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe it down, rinse, and repeat with a rag and a bucket of water. It usually takes a few passes to break down all the grease, but it works like a charm. Once it’s clean, I dry the surface with a microfiber cloth.
Wipe down the interior and Fan area.
For the duct cover, I use almost the same method as I do for the grease filter. I spray it in place with Dawn Powerwash and let it sit for several minutes, allowing the grease to loosen and begin to melt off. Then I return with a rag and a bucket of clean water, rinsing and wiping until all the grease is gone. I repeat as needed until it’s spotless. (If yours is removable, even better) Use a soapy, damp rag to clean any other surface, then wipe, rinse, and repeat until all surfaces are clean.
Dry, Reassemble, and Polish
Thoroughly dry all parts. Reinstall filters and plug everything back in as needed. Finally, I finish it with my favorite oil polish (only if you have a stainless steel or wood canopy). I spray the oil onto a cloth and wipe it across the surface to leave a smooth, polished finish—no streaks!
Maintenance tips to prevent buildup
You can choose how often you clean the range hood, but on average, I recommend a quick wipe-down every 2 weeks to prevent it from getting too greasy and to avoid stubborn buildup between deep cleans. This should make it easier to clean it each time, since you won’t have to deal with stubborn grease.
Frequently asked questions:
What is the best degreaser for cleaning range hoods?
The Power Dawn Dish Soap is all you need to degrease and clean a range hood. I can lift all the grease in just a few minutes, and it’s super easy to clean and wipe away. Ive tried other stuff, and this is my favorite so far.
