This post shares the best interior car cleaning tips and tricks to help you keep your car clean.
Keeping your car clean isn’t easy, especially with kids around. I understand. My two teenagers use my car like it’s their personal closet. Even if you don’t have kids, it can still be a challenge. I make my own messes, too, so I can’t blame it all on them.
Over the years, I’ve tried many interior car cleaning tips and tricks. Some didn’t help, but others have really made a difference. I use these tips regularly to keep my car as tidy as possible, though some weeks are better than others.
I’ve put together my favorite ideas here for you. If you’re looking for practical advice on interior car cleaning, you’ll find plenty of useful tips to try right now.
This post is all about my best interior car cleaning tips and tricks.
Must-Try Interior Car Cleaning Tips And Tricks
1. Empty your car Daily
One of my best interior car cleaning tips is to empty your car every day. Trust me, this will make a huge difference.
Things pile up fast, so I try to bring everything inside each time I get out. Keeping a few totes in your car makes it easier to remove items and put them away where they belong.
2. Have a Bag For Trash At All Times
What’s the best way to keep your car free of trash? Try keeping a small trash can or a trash bag in your car. Remember to empty it daily or every other day.
I like using a bag since it takes up less space, and I can easily pull it out when I need to throw things away. Usually, I can reuse the same bag a few times before needing a new one.
3. Keep A Microfiber Cloth And Spray Bottle In Your Car
Does your car get dusty? Mine does too!
Here’s a simple car cleaning hack. Grab a microfiber cloth and a spray bottle. Lightly spray the cloth, then wipe down your car’s surfaces every other day. This keeps your dashboard and other areas clean between deeper cleans.
I prefer this method over continually buying car wipes, and I keep my microfiber cloth and spray on the driver’s door for easy access.
4. Take Off Muddy Shoes Before Entering the Car
If you have kids in sports or young children, you probably notice how much dirt and mud they bring in, almost like it’s their job!
One easy way to keep your car cleaner is to have them switch from their sports shoes to slides before getting in.
And if you have pets, wiping their paws before they get in the car can really help keep things much cleaner.
It’s also a good idea to keep an extra pair of shoes or slides in your car for those times when your own shoes get dirty.
5. Use Seat Covers For Pets
If you’re looking for interior car cleaning tips and you have pets, try using seat covers. They help catch pet hair and mud, so cleaning your car takes less time and effort.
We use this one, and it’s perfect. No dirt on the seats, and it keeps most of the hair contained on the cover itself.
6. Keep A Portable Vacuum Under Your Seat
Store a small vacuum under your seat so you can quickly clean your car’s carpet seats between deep cleans.
Try to vacuum every other day or whenever you notice dirt. This simple habit will help keep your car interior tidy.
7. Use a Lilly Brush and/or Pumice Stone To Clean Upholstery
If you’ve ever tried removing pet hair from your car seat or carpet, you know how tough it can be with just a vacuum, especially if the hair has been there for a while.
I keep these two products in my car to help manage pet hair between deeper cleanings. Both are really useful, whether you’re just keeping up with regular cleaning or doing a full detail.
8. Use a Lint Roller Before Entering The Car
If you have pets, keeping a lint roller in your car is a game-changer. I use mine every day because my dog’s hair always ends up on my clothes.
Without it, my car would be covered in fur. Lint rolling really cuts down on the mess. If you don’t have one in your car yet, it’s worth adding to your essentials.
9. Organize Your Car
If you try just one of these interior car cleaning tips and tricks, make it this one. The best way to keep a clutter-free car is to get it organized.
Trust me, cars can collect all sorts of random stuff if you don’t have some type of organizational system set up.
I’ve written a whole post about car organization, so check it out for more tips on organizing your car to keep it clean and functional.
10. Keep a Pack of Microfiber Cloths in Your Car
Having a pack of microfiber cloths in my car has helped me out more times than I can count. I recommend keeping a few in your trunk or center console.
Sooner or later, something will spill or need wiping. If you clean up messes right away, you can stop stains from setting in and keep your seats and carpets looking good.
11. Use a Steam Cleaner for Hard-to-Reach Places
Gunk always seems to show up in the oddest places in a car. It gets stuck in crevices and cracks that are tough to clean with just a rag and some cleaner.
I bought a steam cleaner a few years back and usually use it around the house, but I just found out it works great in my car, too. My car has never looked better!
The steam cleaner helps you clean the surfaces of your car interior, reach into cracks, and loosen gunk that’s hard to get out otherwise. You can even use it on your rims. If you do this every so often, it’s easy to keep your car looking clean.
The one I got seems to be out of stock often, but any steam cleaner should work perfectly fine.
